Yogic concepts have been incorporated into traditional medicine for centuries as an holistic approach to attaining physical and mental wellness. The principles of yoga are deeply rooted in the Indian medical tradition and have been studied extensively in recent years. Yoga is one of the oldest forms of traditional medicine, with origins dating back more than 5,000 years. It is a system of physical and mental practices designed to promote health and well being, and to attain a balance between the body and mind. The core of this system is composed of physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (Pranayama), and meditation (Yoga Nidra). Yogic concepts are closely related to Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine system. In Ayurveda the practice of yoga is considered to be an important part of achieving overall health and well-being. It is believed that yoga can help to balance the five elements of the human body (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) so that the body can stay in healthy equilibrium. Yoga, as a form of traditional medicine, is now widely utilized in western countries. It is often used to treat a variety of physical and mental conditions such as hypertension, depression, and stress. It can also be used to enhance physical performance as well as to reduce the amount of stress in a person’s life. Yogic concepts are deeply connected with the spiritual being and therefore it is also used to improve spiritual understanding and self-awareness. It is believed that when we increase our self-awareness we become better able to cope with life’s stresses and develop greater emotional resilience. Yoga is a powerful tool for achieving physical and mental health and can provide a complement to traditional medical treatments. It is important to always consult a qualified yoga instructor before starting a practice, and to receive proper guidance on how to practice safely and correctly. Once mastered, practitioners of yoga will experience a host of physical and mental benefits, and can start to develop a connection with the divine, the ultimate goal of a yogi.
