Ethnomedicine is a practice of traditional medicine based on bioactive compounds obtained from plants and animals and is practiced by various cultural groups especially those with little access to modern medicines. The word ethno medicine is sometimes used interchangeably with traditional medicine.

Ethnomedical research applies the methods of ethnobotany and medical anthropology. The medicine traditions in ethnomedicine are often preserved merely by oral tradition.
