Traditional medicine has a lengthy history of attempting to explain and thereby treat personality traits, emotional functioning and behavior. It is established on the idea that the human mental state is greatly impacted by physical processes such as the functioning of the body’s organs. In some cases, the ultimate goal of traditional medicine is to bring the holistic self into balance. Traditional practitioners believe that psychological and physical problems have common root causes and that these root causes can be treated through treatments that are directed at both the physical and psychological aspects of functioning. For example, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been used to help people with emotional and psychological difficulties. TCM teaches that health can only be achieved when the atmosphere of the environment and the bodies of the individual are in harmony. In alignment with this principle, TCM practitioners use various techniques such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, diet, and meditation to bring both the body and the mind into balance. Thus, the ultimate goal of TCM is to promote mental health and overall health transformations. Japan, too, has been using traditional medicines for the promotion of mental health for centuries. Such treatments use herbs, acupressure, diet, physical exercise, and mindfulness to restore balance in the functioning of the body and mind. Therapeutic treatments to help individuals achieve a psychological equilibrium involve focusing on the mental and physical health of the patient, together. In some cases, these treatments may use spiritual guidance to help patients learn how to cope and use their inner wisdom to achieve healing and better manage their emotional and psychological states. Traditional medicine may differ from modern treatments in many ways, but one commonality between them is the focus on the ultimate goal of improving mental health. By using ancient techniques to bring body and mind into balance, traditional medicine remains a relevant and useful way to promote psychological wellbeing.
