Pharmacological Activities Of Medicinal Herbs

Pharmacological Activities Of Medicinal Herbs

The use of herbal medicines for the treatment of various diseases has been an intrinsic part of traditional medicine. The most common herbs used in traditional systems all over the world are ginger, turmeric, cardamom, garlic, and holy basil. Despite the relative safety regarding the medicinal use of herbs, there is a dearth of information regarding the pharmacological activities of these plants. The most active components of/present in medicinal herbs are alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, flavonoids, sterols, and coumarins. The pharmacological activity of these components is attributed to their antioxidant properties. They possess powerful antioxidant properties that help fight against the oxidative damage caused by free radicals, which can lead to an array of chronic diseases. The polyphenols present in herbal medicines, particularly in tee and spices, also possess anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties which can help reduce the risk of developing various forms of cancer. Ginger, turmeric, cardamom, garlic, and holy basil have all been found to have various pharmacological activities. Ginger and turmeric are known to possess many beneficial effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anticonvulsant, and antinausea effects. Furthermore, ginger and turmeric can also aid in the digestion process by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes. These herbs can also be beneficial in managing diabetes mellitus type 2, as they are associated with improved glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Cardamom is another medicinal herb that is widely used in traditional medicine systems due to its immense therapeutic potential. It possesses pharmacological properties ranging from antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory of the digestive system. Garlic has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activities and can be beneficial in reducing cholesterol levels and prevent heart diseases. Finally, holy basil is known for its calming and sedative effects. It can also help improve digestion, prevent fatigue, and boost the immune system. These phytochemicals present in medicinal herbs have the potential to provide safe and effective treatments for a variety of conditions. Overall, medicinal herbs can offer a natural and safe alternative to conventional pharmaceuticals and should be more extensively investigated to better understand their pharmacological activities.
