Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is an empirically-supported form of short-term psychotherapy that has been used to treat depression and anxiety disorders for several decades. The therapy is based on the belief that people’s psychological problems are rooted in their interactions with and perceptions of others. It focuses on uncovering and understanding the interpersonal dynamics that may be contributing to someone’s distress, and works to help them improve their relationships with others and manage their own feelings. IPT is often combined with other forms of traditional medicine, such as medication or cognitive behavioral therapy, to help achieve optimal mental health. During interpersonal therapy sessions, the therapist will help the client identify the core issues or concerns that are causing the symptoms of distress. By exploring the patient’s interpersonal relationships and problem-solving skills, the therapist will encourage them to develop strategies for making relationships more fulfilling. The therapist and client will use role-playing, discussion, educational activities, and other therapeutic tools to work through problems and develop healthier coping mechanisms. All interpersonal therapists are professionally trained and certified to provide this form of treatment. One advantage of interpersonal therapy is its versatility. It can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual, and it does not require a great deal of commitment or time. Additionally, this type of therapy tends to be a cost-effective approach and does not require pharmaceuticals. This makes it ideal for individuals who want to address their psychological issues without expensive and/or potentially addictive treatments. Interpersonal therapy can be a great complement to other forms of traditional medicine. By providing an emotional, relational approach to symptom relief, it offers a layer of holistic care and support while targeting underlying issues that often drive mental health concerns. With the guidance of an experienced therapist, individuals can learn to manage their emotions and strengthen their interpersonal skills in order to boost satisfaction and well-being over all.
