Holistic nursing is a practice that traditional medicine has long embraced. This type of nursing focuses on the individual patient and takes into consideration the patient's physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional welfare. Its goal is to promote health, prevent illness, and facilitate healing. Holistic nursing views the patient as more than a set of medical problems and symptoms, and instead involve a multidimensional approach that considers the person in their entirety. One of the primary philosophies behind holistic nursing is the idea that the patient and family form a unit of care. As such, the nurse is responsible for providing not only medical care, but also emotional and spiritual support as well. For example, a nurse might offer words of support to a patient's family members, or provide advice about adapting to lifestyle changes. This is in contrast to traditional medical models, which tend to focus more narrowly on the physical needs of the patient. Holistic nursing also emphasizes the nurse's role in promoting health and prevention. This means that nurses must recognize and act on signs of illness before they manifest, as well as take steps to prevent illness before it occurs. They must also be sensitive to the impact socio-cultural and environmental issues can have on health. In addition, they must pay attention to physical signs, such as the patient's overall energy level and sleep patterns. These all give insights into a patient's health and overall wellbeing. Finally, a hallmark of holistic nursing practice is that it is patient-centered. This means that the nurse listens to and acts on the patient's wishes and beliefs. A holistic nurse puts the person's values and goals first. They create a partnership relationship with the patient, one where mutual trust and respect are important. In the traditional medical setting, the role of the holistic nurse has become increasingly important in recent years. Today, they play an essential role in promoting health, preventing illness, and offering support and healing.
