Holistic dentistry is an amalgamation of traditional medicine and the holistic approach. It is a relatively new concept of dentistry which focuses on the overall health of the individual rather than only treating the dental conditions they may have. The aim of the practice is to identify and manage dental diseases based on the entirety of the body and its parts rather than simply addressing the symptoms. It seeks to find the root of a condition and treat it from an internal as well as an external perspective. Holistic dentistry involves looking at the body as a whole, rather than compartmentalizing it into different systems. It takes into consideration the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of health and combines it with the evaluation of the physical body. Nutrition and lifestyle are also taken into account. This allows holistic dentists to assess and diagnose conditions which may be caused by any component of the individual’s wellbeing. The most common treatment involves the use of materials such as natural enzymes, herbs, and homeopathic remedies. Conventional and preventive dentistry is also incorporated. This includes the use of fluoride, plaque control, sealants and nutritional advice. Holistic dentists are also trained in the use of alternative therapies such as oxygen-ozone therapy, nutraceuticals and bio-identifying treatments, which can be used in addition to traditional treatments. Holistic dentists believe that a healthy oral environment is essential for overall general health. What makes holistic dentistry different from conventional dentistry is that it is more focused on preventative care rather than treating conditions and diseases after they have already occurred. Proactive measures are taken to ensure that the individual does not experience any dental issues in the future. This helps to ensure the long-term health and wellbeing of the patient.
