Biofeedback is an ancient concept used in traditional medicine and is used across a variety of medical practices. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to regulate an elevated heart rate and promote balance between the Yin and Yang—essential energies that are said to inhabit all of us. Biofeedback has been used for over 2,000 years to improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners use it to regulate heart rates, balance the flow of energy in the body, and sustain overall health. The technique uses states of relaxation, concentration, and awareness, along with a self-assessment of bodily sensations. In traditional Chinese medicine, elevated heart rate can be attributed to an imbalance of Yin and Yang, energy pathways in the body. Simply put, an overabundance of Yang energy or an under-abundance of Yin energy can affect the heart rate. This imbalance can be brought on by several sources including a too-fast lifestyle, fear, overexertion, and stress. To regulate an elevated heart rate, practitioners use biofeedback as part of Chinese medicine therapy. Through concentration and controlled breathing, practitioners work to create a state of calm in the patient. This allows energy to flow freely throughout the body, restoring the balance of Yin and Yang. Biofeedback’s effectiveness in treating an elevated heart rate is attributed to its relaxation effects. It releases endorphins, naturally produced hormones that reduce the intensity of body aches and pains, reduce stress, and increase the feeling of wellbeing. This cleared energy flow helps to ease and heal psychological, emotional, and physical ailments. The success of biofeedback in traditional Chinese medicine supports the assertion that Chinese medicine is a positive and powerful practice of natural health. Its various methods are always focused on restoring health and harmony within the body, and its continued use has proven successful across hundreds of generations.
