The concept of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) in traditional medicine is based on the idea that dispute resolution is a vital pathway to resolving conflicts and healing a range of mental disorders. It has been steadily gaining in popularity over the past few decades, as a range of mental health professionals have discovered its efficacy in treating a wide variety of conditions. DBT is a type of cognitive-behavioural therapy that entails a blend of element from traditional medicine. At its core, the approach is premised on acknowledging and reconciling two competing ideas or forces, often termed thesis and antithesis. For example, the doctor and patient may disagree on what's causing the patient's mental disorder and how to treat it, but by examining both sides they take a few small steps towards resolving the conflict. The goal is to reach a compromise, or synthesis, between the two sides to make progress. In therapeutic sessions with DBT, the patient is guided in identifying, monitoring, and changing his or her distressing and maladaptive behaviours. DBT also emphasises the need to vary the type of therapy depending on the client’s personal needs and readiness to engage in therapy. This means that the therapist can modify techniques and interventions in order to best suit the individual’s needs in each session. Furthermore, DBT is an evidence-based, scientifically tested approach for treating psychological and emotional issues. It has been found to be beneficial for people struggling with mental health issues, including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and self-harming behaviours. Studies have also concluded that DBT could help those struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and other conditions. Overall, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is an effective approach to treating mental health issues that draw upon elements of traditional medicine. It focuses on dispute resolution to help move patients forward in their healing journey, while modifying individual interventions to suit the client’s unique needs. DBT has been proven to help with a wide range of mental disorders, and is a valuable tool for physicians and mental health professionals.
