Covid-19 has changed the way of life of millions of people around the world in this pandemic situation, and the search for an effective therapy is an urgent one. Traditional medicinal practices such as Ayurveda have been applied to identify possible treatments for Covid-19 and provide natural-based solutions. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of healing, has attempted to employ various natural therapies for Covid-19. Ayurvedic therapeutics such as detoxification therapy, immune-enhancing herbal formulas, decoctions, churnas, asanas, and pranayama exercises have been employed to bring the body into balance. Decoctions are prescribed as main medicine while herbal formulations are used as assistive medicine. Galgauch and Giloy have been commonly used for their immune-enhancing properties. Similarly, Sri Lankan and Chinese herbal formulations have also been employed for their antiviral and immunomodulatory effects. Immunity-boosting churnas and pathya aahar (a nutritious diet) have also been used to strengthen the immune system. Ayurvedic diet provides balance to the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and helps promote good health. Similarly, various ayurvedic immunity-boosting herbal formulations combined with adequate rest and sleep also play an important role in boosting the body’s immunity to fight against virus infections. Several clinical studies have been conducted to determine the efficacy of ayurvedic therapies on Covid-19. A research study conducted in Banaras Hindu University utilised ayurvedic approaches such as Aragvadha decoction, MahaMurcchana, Avipittalovaini, Shwikomarga of Dashmula, asanas, and pranayama to treat the patients with Covid-19 and observed significant reduction in symptoms. In conclusion, ayurvedic practices have the potential to be used as either primary or adjuvant therapy to treat Covid-19. Immunity-boosting herbal formulations, yogic postures, and breath exercises, along with a nutritious diet and ample rest, may prove beneficial in treating and preventing the disease.
