Covid-19 And Ethnomedicine

Covid-19 And Ethnomedicine

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has put the world in a state of emergency. In the absence of an effective medical therapy or vaccine, countries have adopted various strategies such as lockdown which have proven to be effective in curbing the spread of the virus. Traditional medicine, also known as ethno-medicine, is an ethnographically-based health practice system that is practiced worldwide. It has been used for generations to deal with illnesses and maintain the overall well-being of its practitioners. In the light of the current health crisis, traditional medicines have captured the attention of the world and many have called for the revival of traditional medicinal practices. Traditional medicinal systems are adapted to local conditions, cultures and environment, and offer a holistic approach to health. Traditionally, practitioners use plants, minerals, diet and lifestyle to heal illnesses and maintain wellness. For example, certain medicinal plants can be consumed as tea or decoctions to strengthen the immune system. Traditional Ayurveda and Chinese medicines have also been used to treat respiratory infections and other illnesses. Due to the highly contagious nature of Covid-19, traditional medicinal practices and measures are advocated against the spread of the virus. These measures can be used to lower the risk of being infected by the virus. This includes personal hygienic practices such as frequent handwashing, attitude changes such as subtle changes in diet and lifestyle modifications accessible for both rural and urban populations. Although traditional medicine is not the only way to fight against Covid-19, it has been found to be a reliable way to protect one’s health. To this end, traditional medicinal systems such as Ayurveda, Tibetan and Chinese medicine should be further explored and understood. In addition, traditional medicinal practices should also be encouraged whenever possible in order to provide more comprehensive protection against Covid-19 and other illnesses.
