Traditional medicine has long used a holistic approach to achieve physical and emotional wellness. One such treatment is acupressure, which is believed to be effective in treating a variety of ailments from headaches to depression. Acupressure is a form of massage therapy that has been used in Chinese medicine for over five thousand years. The aim of acupressure is to unblock the flow of energy (known as "qi") through the body's meridians, allowing the body to heal itself. It is believed that stagnated qi will cause pain and distress with an acupressure practitioner applying pressure at a specific point or point on the body. In acupressure, specific key points on the body are manipulated to stimulate an energetic response, with the aim of restoring balance. These points are termed "acupressure points," and they are said to be closely linked with the body’s organs and systems. Stimulation of these points releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers that can aid in reducing pain and sensitivity. Acupressure may also improve circulation and digestion, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. In addition to healing physical ailments, acupressure can also be used to help address psychological unbalanced or emotional distress. This includes feelings of grief, fear, trauma, stress, and depression. It can also be used to help improve mood, relaxation, and sleep patterns, as well as promote general wellbeing. Acupressure can be performed by an experienced practitioner or with self-administered massage techniques, but care should be taken if practicing acupressure techniques on oneself. Before attempting these techniques, it is important to become educated about the principles of acupressure and be sure to proceed under the guidance of an expert in the field.
