Acupuncturists are healthcare professionals who use a traditional Chinese method called acupuncture to alleviate pain and treat various medical conditions. Acupuncture is based on the belief that energy, referred to as qi, flows through the body along pathways known as meridians. Acupuncture works by inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body to unblock or stimulate the flow of qi. Acupuncturists are trained in a variety of techniques, including needling techniques, moxibustion, cupping and lifestyle and dietary therapy. Before beginning treatment, acupuncturists take a thorough medical history, assess lifestyle habits and take pulse readings. They also use physical touch to diagnose the patient’s pain, testing to see how much pressure is felt when pressure is applied to certain areas. This is to identify any problems with the flow of energy and to find the best treatment plan. Acupuncture has been proven to be effective for a multitude of ailments, and can be beneficial in treating a wide range of conditions, such as migraines, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), stress, fertility issues, chronic muscular pain and even depression. Studies have shown that acupuncture is an extremely safe and effective form of therapy. Although minor side effects may occur, such as bruising at the needle sites, these are usually minor and do not last long. Acupuncture is a holistic form of healing that focuses on overall well-being, not just the alleviation of symptoms. An acupuncturist views a person in his or her entirety, treating the physical, mental and emotional aspects, so that the whole person is treated and the patient’s energy is brought back into balance. The result is often a deep sense of relaxation, improved balance and enhanced well-being. Acupuncturists strive to help patients understand their condition and to explore ways to prevent it from recurring in the future. By taking a holistic approach to treatment, acupuncturists provide patients with long-term healing so they can enjoy a healthier and happier life.
