Acupuncture needles are a recognizable form of traditional Chinese medicine. More commonly referred to as 'sterile, single-use, thin stainlesssteel needles', acupuncture needles are used to alleviate pain through inserting the needles into the skin and applying pressure to the identified acupuncture points. Because of the ancient Eastern medical philosophy of Yin and Yang, puncturing or stimulating the body parts to allow the flow of energy or qi (chi) acts as one of the main ways of restoring the body's natural equilibrium. This is achieved through reducing pain, as well as stimulating the immune system, allowing for proper healing of both body and mind. Acupuncture is frequently prescribed by Chinese medicine practitioners to treat conditions such as pains, digestive problems, stress, fertility, and other chronic illnesses. Through the stimulation of certain strategically installed needles, an acupuncture specialist is able to focus on manipulating both the physical, psychological, and emotional conditions of a patient. Sometimes the pain caused by the needle insertion isn't immediately felt by the patient, but the effect can be seen in the form of a 'qi reaction', including things such as numbness, tingling, warmth, and energy (or a feeling of 'ah'). This could be because of the stimulation of nociceptors that are found within the skin. The acupuncture needles have to be of extreme quality and certified for medical use. The needles also need to be handled with care and disposed of after single-use. This is to reduce the risk of cross-contamination with infections, toxins, or other diseases, especially when being applied in areas of acute medical weakness. Overall, acupuncture needles, not with standing the slight pain that is occasionally experienced upon insertion, are generally found to be effective in restoring the body's normal balance, as well as allowing healing of any associated diseases or illnesses. It is important to remember though, that acupuncture requires a trained and certified specialist with a knowledge and understanding of the subject and should not be done at home.
