Title : 109 Volumes, 50,000 medicinal plants: Patanjali’s World Herbal Encyclopedia sets a global benchmark

Abstract:

The World Herbal Encyclopedia (WHE) represents one of the largest and most comprehensive global initiatives dedicated to documenting, preserving, and systematizing medicinal plant knowledge. Developed under the aegis of the Patanjali Research Foundation, the Encyclopedia bridges ancient traditional wisdom with modern botanical, ethnopharmacological, and biomedical sciences. In an era marked by the rapid erosion of indigenous knowledge systems due to globalization, ecological degradation, and cultural transformation, the WHE emerges as both a scientific milestone and a vital cultural archive. Spanning 109 volumes, the Encyclopedia documents nearly 50,000 medicinal plant species, including algae, fungi, lichens, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, making it one of the most taxonomically inclusive herbal repositories ever compiled. It integrates approximately 7,500 plant genera, 250,000 botanical synonyms, and nearly 1.2 million vernacular names collected from over 2,000 languages and dialects worldwide. This vast linguistic and taxonomic consolidation addresses critical challenges in medicinal plant identification and nomenclature, thereby enhancing accuracy in herbal research and crosscultural scientific communication. The WHE incorporates information from nearly 600,000 bibliographic sources, including classical Ayurvedic texts, traditional medical manuscripts, ethnobotanical records, herbarium archives, scientific journals, and digital databases. These resources comprise over 155,000 research papers, 169,000 books, and 101,000 web-based references. Each plant profile systematically presents taxonomic classification, botanical description, habitat and distribution, vernacular names, traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, pharmacological activities, safety considerations, and therapeutic relevance. The Encyclopedia is further strengthened by more than 65,000 botanical illustrations that support reliable plant identification and academic utility. A particularly significant contribution of the WHE is its documentation of traditional medicinal knowledge from over 2,000 tribal and indigenous communities worldwide, including nearly 1,000 traditional healing practices that were previously transmitted largely through oral traditions. Beyond preservation, the Encyclopedia serves as a valuable hypothesis-generating platform for future pharmacological and phytochemical research by linking traditional therapeutic claims with scientific evidence. Through its integrative, interdisciplinary, and digitally accessible framework, the World Herbal Encyclopedia establishes a new global benchmark in herbal scholarship. More than a reference work, it stands as a living repository of humanity’s medicinal plant heritage, supporting scientific innovation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable healthcare worldwide.
