Title : Shuddhikriyas: The detox science of yoga for modern health

Abstract:

Shuddhikriyas, a cornerstone of Hatha Yoga, represent ancient cleansing practices designed to purify the body and mind. As articulated in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, these six fundamental techniques—Dhauti, Basti, Trataka, Nauli, Kapalbhati, and Neti—are pivotal in preparing the practitioner for higher yogic endeavors. The scripture aptly states: "Dhauti? basti? tath? neti? tr??aka? naulika? tath? | Kap?labh?ti? cait?ni ?a?karm??i pracak?ate ||" These kriyas cleanse vital systems in the body, enhancing physical and mental equilibrium. In Ayurveda, Shuddhikriyas are understood as tools to balance the tridoshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, commonly referred to as the humors. By addressing imbalances, particularly in Pitta and Kapha, they help eliminate accumulated toxins—a concept paralleled in modern medical science as detoxification. For instance, Vaman Dhauti provides immediate relief from acidity and, when practiced consistently, can alleviate chronic acid reflux. Similarly, Neti Kriyas are instrumental in managing respiratory and ENT (ear, nose, and throat) issues by clearing nasal passages and enhancing breathing. Our research team has made significant contributions to this field, notably through a study on Shankha Prakshalana—a technique that detoxifies the digestive tract. Our findings confirm its safety for individuals with hypertension when practiced under expert supervision. Furthermore, recent studies available on PubMed underscore the therapeutic efficacy of Shuddhikriyas, highlighting their role in managing chronic conditions such as obesity, constipation, and stress. In the context of modern health challenges, Shuddhikriyas bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary science. This presentation will delve into their practical applications, transformative benefits, and the growing body of research supporting their integration into global wellness practices.
