Title : A comprehensive ayurvedic management of hydro-uretero-nephrosis due to ureteric calculus-a case study
Abstract:
Background: Hydro-uretero-nephrosis is defined as a dilatation of the renal pelvis, calyces and ureter caused by the obstruction to free flow of urine from the kidney, leading to progressive atrophy of the renal cortex. It can result from functional or an anatomical process obstructing the flow of urine, which can occur anywhere from the kidneys to the urethral meatus. The urinary obstruction may be acute or chronic, partial or complete and unilateral or bilateral. The signs and symptoms may depend on the cause, location and duration of obstruction. The prevalence of the condition is about 1 in 500 people. It is considered under Vrukka Roga and Ashmari in preview of Ayurvedic science based on the similarities in Cause and Signs and symptoms exhibited by the subjects.
Aims and Objectives: To assess the efficacy of Ayurvedic management in Hydro-uretero- nephrosis due to upper Ureteric Calculus.
Materials and Methods: In the present study, a male subject aged 48 years, driver in occupation not a known case of Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension or any major illness, no history of Trauma and Surgery approached Kayachiktsa OPD with chief complaints of Pain in left lumbar region since 1 month associated with burning micturation since 15 days. O/E Tenderness ++ in left lumbar region and USG report was suggestive of mild Left Hydro-uretero- nephrosis due to upper Ureteric Calculus (4 mm). Ayurvedic management by means of Shamaushadhi (Oral medications) was adopted for a period of 1 month along with dietary measures.
Results: The subject showed satisfactory and remarkable improvement after the treatment without any adverse drug reaction and post treatment USG was suggestive of Normal KUB study.
