Title : Growth potential of nutraceuticals in emerging countries like Bangladesh

Abstract:

Herbs and medicinal plants have been used worldwide for therapeutic purposes for thousands of years. Their use declined in the early nineteenth century with the advent of chemical analysis techniques that enabled scientists to isolate, extract and modify active plant constituents. In recent decades, however, natural medicines have experienced a global resurgence due to advances in analytical methods, quality control systems, and clinical research demonstrating their effectiveness in disease prevention and treatment. Bangladesh, an emerging economy in South Asia, is increasingly investing in the development of its herbal medicine sector despite its long tradition of using indigenous medicinal practices. Several pharmaceutical manufacturers, including leading national companies, have established dedicated herbal medicine divisions and expanded their investment portfolios in natural health products. The pharmaceutical industry of Bangladesh has maintained consistent double-digit growth in recent years and is currently valued at approximately USD 3 billion annually. The country has achieved near self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical production and exports medicines to more than 150 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. Although natural medicines account for less than 5% of the total pharmaceutical market, the segment demonstrates considerable growth potential. Historically, the sector was dominated by small companies targeting rural practitioners, which limited acceptance among specialist physicians and contributed to negative perceptions regarding herbal products. Recently, however, several leading pharmaceutical companies have introduced standardized herbal formulations, modern dosage forms, and probiotics while actively engaging specialist healthcare professionals. These developments have improved product credibility and created new opportunities for mainstream market expansion. This review and market analysis explore the growth potential of the natural medicine sector in Bangladesh and other emerging markets, highlighting key drivers, opportunities, and barriers influencing its future development.
