Title : Yoga nidra: A mind body intervention for stress reduction and holistic health
Abstract:
Introduction: Yoga Nidra is a guided meditative relaxation technique derived from ancient yogic traditions that promotes deep physical, mental, and emotional relaxation while maintaining conscious awareness. Growing scientific evidence supports its role as a complementary therapy in preventive and therapeutic healthcare.
Methods: A narrative review of classical yogic literature and published scientific studies was conducted to evaluate the physiological and psychological effects of Yoga Nidra. Relevant evidence on its mechanisms of action and clinical applications was synthesized.
Results: The reviewed literature indicates that regular Yoga Nidra practice reduces stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and fatigue by modulating autonomic nervous system activity, reducing sympathetic overactivity, and enhancing parasympathetic dominance. It has also been associated with improved cognitive function, emotional regulation, sleep quality, and quality of life. Furthermore, Yoga Nidra demonstrates beneficial effects in managing chronic pain, hypertension, diabetes, and psychosomatic disorders by promoting neuroendocrine balance and deep relaxation.
Conclusion: Yoga Nidra is a safe, cost-effective, and non-pharmacological mind–body intervention with significant potential in health promotion and disease management. Its integration into routine healthcare and wellness programs may enhance preventive care, improve psychological resilience, and support holistic well-being. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are warranted to strengthen the existing evidence.
