Title : Pregnancy, labour pain, aromatherapy and GABA
Abstract:
Pregnancy is one of the most profound and transformative experiences a woman can share with her partner. At its heart, it is the creation of life, a remarkable journey that encompasses conception, foetal development, and ultimately childbirth. The miracle of nurturing a new life within the body is both awe-inspiring and deeply meaningful. Pregnancy also fosters a unique connection between mother and child. As the baby grows and movements become perceptible, many women experience an extraordinary sense of bonding, purpose, and unconditional love. Throughout this journey, the female body undergoes significant physiological and emotional changes, demonstrating remarkable strength, adaptability, and resilience in its role of nurturing life. The beauty of pregnancy lies in its complexity and individuality. Each woman’s experience is unique, encompassing challenges, joy, growth, and profound emotional transformation. Drawing upon extensive experience in prenatal and postnatal care, Sunita incorporates carefully selected essential oils that may support GABAergic pathways associated with relaxation, stress reduction, and pain modulation. Particular attention is given to the safe and appropriate use of aromatherapy throughout pregnancy and labour, with the aim of enhancing maternal comfort and well-being. Aromatherapy may also offer supportive care for a variety of common pregnancy-related concerns, including morning sickness, nausea, lower back discomfort, mood fluctuations, sleep disturbances, stretch marks, and labour contractions. Equally important is the emotional and psychological well-being of both mother and father during this significant life transition. In this presentation, Sunita will introduce a selection of essential oils and discuss their key chemical constituents, explaining the rationale behind their use in pregnancy and labour support. She will share practical aromatherapy techniques and clinical insights gained through years of experience, illustrating how the integration of aromatherapy from the second trimester onward may help support a calmer, more comfortable birthing experience and potentially reduce reliance on conventional pharmacological pain-management interventions.
