Title : Holistic management of hair disorders through ayurveda: Integrating classical principles with modern trichology

Abstract:

Hair disorders such as hair fall, androgenic alopecia, premature greying, and dandruff are increasingly prevalent due to modern lifestyle factors including stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, and environmental exposure. Modern trichology offers advanced regenerative therapies such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC), which promote hair follicle stimulation and regeneration. However, sustaining long-term outcomes and addressing root systemic causes remain challenges. Ayurveda provides a holistic perspective on hair health (Kesha), emphasizing the balance of Doshas primarily Pitta and Vata and the nourishment of Dhatus, especially Rasa, Rakta and Asthi. Classical Ayurvedic interventions, including Rasayana therapy, Shiro Abhyanga, Nasya, and herbal formulations such as Bhringraj, Amla, and Brahmi, aim to correct internal imbalances, improve scalp health, and enhance follicular strength. This paper proposes an integrative therapeutic model combining Ayurvedic principles with PRP and GFC therapies. PRP and GFC deliver concentrated growth factors that stimulate dermal papilla cells and prolong the anagen phase of the hair cycle, while Ayurvedic treatments provide systemic detoxification, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and adaptogenic support. The synergy of these approaches may enhance treatment efficacy, improve patient compliance, and reduce recurrence rates. Preliminary clinical observations suggest that combining regenerative procedures with individualized Ayurvedic protocols—encompassing diet (Ahara), lifestyle (Vihara), and mental well-being (Manas)—can lead to improved hair density, reduced hair fall, and better scalp health. This integrative approach highlights a promising direction for holistic and sustainable management of hair disorders and underscores the need for further clinical research to validate its efficacy in global trichology practice.
